The Rheingold Curse: A Germanic Saga of Greed
and Revenge from the Medieval Icelandic Edda
Medieval music ensemble Sequentia has been among the leaders in original research and theatrical renditions of medieval epics for nearly three decades. They return to the Boston Early Music Festival with a thrilling performance of Edda, one of the earliest Norse legends recounting the Rheingold curse: the bloody tale of revenge and seduction that also inspired Wagner’s Ring Cycle. In this magically theatrical piece rooted in the strange land of pre-Christian Norse stories, Sequentia, led by Benjamin Bagby, excavates the underlying emotional roots of these stories, and brings them to light in a stirring production that examines the best and worst sides of human nature in us all. Sung to the original Eddic poems (ca. 800-1000).
