J. S. Bach: Matthäus Passion, BWV 244
The Festival Concert schedule opens with a monumental performance featuring the BEMF début of the Gramophone Award–winning Dunedin Consort. Acclaimed for their joyously vivid music-making, eight solo voices and a team of exceptional instrumentalists under the direction of long-time BEMF guest artist Kristian Bezuidenhout promise an inimitably fresh performance of one of the most iconic masterpieces of the Baroque, J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Unfolding with propulsive dramatic momentum, Bach’s arresting setting of the passion narrative presents unparalleled insight into and meditative reflections on faith and humanity in music of staggering beauty and profundity. Join us for an engaging Pre-Concert Talk at 7pm with internationally acclaimed Bach scholar Professor Christoph Wolff.
