2021 Virtual Exhibition | Dipper Restorations

Boston Early Music Festival

Andrew Dipper is a renowned luthier and an expert in the restoration and conservation of historic musical instruments and bows. Since 1967 he has worked on the restoration of musical instruments created by some of the greatest makers of past times, including Stradivari, Amati, Tielke, Testore, Tieffenbrucker, Louvet, Cousineau, Barak Norman, Henry Jay and others. His restored instruments can be found in many private collections and public museums. Andrew ran a workshop for musical instrument restoration in Cremona where he learned from and was influenced by Francesco Bisolotti,  Gio Battista Morassi and Giovanni Lucchi. Dipper’s restoration work on musical instruments enabled him to examine the making and design techniques of the great musical instrument makers of past times. He is fluent in Italian and French which has allowed him access to the many rare manuscripts and books on music and musical instruments that he has used to uncover the working practices of the great violin makers of the past and how their construction techniques influenced the sound of their instruments.

Examples of his restoration and conservation work can be found in many of the world’s foremost public and private musical instrument collections, including: The Metropolitan Museum in New York; the Federal Musical Instrument Museum of Berlin; the National Music Museum, Vermillion, South Dakota; and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Since 2009, Mr. Dipper has been Consultant Conservator to the Yale University Collection of Musical Instruments, and from 2015, an honorary member of the Board of Trustees of the National Music Museum, SD. He is master violin and bow maker, currently serving as a member of the Entente Internationale des Maitres Luthiers et Archetiers d’ Art, and The American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers, AFVBM. Mr. Dipper, is a sought-after lecturer and has taught violinmaking and restoration in Cremona, London, and Oberlin College.
