Montserrat Figueras was an outstanding performer in a vast vocal repertoire that spanned the Mediaeval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. She was born in Barcelona into a family of music lovers. In 1967, she joined the renowned viola da gambist and conductor Jordi Savall as an artistic and life partner. In addition to an extraordinary career as a performer, recording artist, teacher, and mentor, she won many awards and appointments, including the honorary French title of Officier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and an Artist for the Peace designation by UNESCO.
Having presented her many times on the Boston Early Music Festival concert stage – as a member of Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya – we wish to dedicate our Charpentier Chamber Opera performances over Thanksgiving weekend, November 26 and 27, 2011, on behalf of the Board of Directors, Overseers, Trustees, Artists, and Staff of BEMF, to our dear friend and honored colleague, Montse. Her loss will be keenly felt throughout the Early Music community.
