Charms, Riddles, and Elegies of the Medieval Northlands (8th–11th centuries)
Gaze into a distant world of bards and warriors, valkyries and philosophers with the legendary Medieval music ensemble Sequentia. Director Benjamin Bagby marks the 30th anniversary of their BEMF début at the 1989 Festival with an intense new program exploring the ancient music from across Germany, England, and Iceland. These storied musicians conjure up otherworldly sounds from a bygone era with songs of magic, healing, and exile, from haunting pagan laments to mystical celebrations, and mythical legends from England’s Beowulf, Iceland’s Edda, and more.
“Time stood still and a thousand years of music melted away.”
Benjamin Bagby, director, voice & Germanic harp; Hanna Marti, voice & harps; Stef Conner, voice; Norbert Rodenkirchen, wooden & bone flutes
