Jean Richafort: A Requiem for Josquin | Founded in Vienna in 2004, the 5 men of Cinquecento are some of Europe’s most highly regarded Renaissance vocalists. For their return to BEMF, they welcome a 6th singer for a special program celebrating composer Josquin des Prez on the 500th anniversary of his death. The centerpiece of their concert is an exquisite tribute from his student, Jean Richafort, the Requiem in memoriam Josquin des Prez, alongside some of Josquin’s own compositions that Richafort reverently references.

Liturgy and Homage in Jean Richafort’s Setting of the Requiem Mass
Presented by Suzannah Clark, Morton B. Knafel Professor of Music, Harvard University

This talk will highlight key features of the Requiem up to Jean Richafort’s time in order draw out the distinctive compositional traits of Richafort’s setting. In particular, we will focus on Richafort’s choice of chant melody and possible meanings behind his references to Josquin’s music.
